Frequently asked questions

Open Day: Swimming FAQs

When should I arrive for the Open Day swim?

The dedicated Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers session begins at 2:00pm. We recommend arriving by 1:45pm at the latest to get registered, changed, and attend the safety briefing. However, feel free to arrive from 10:00am onwards to enjoy the sailing club activities!

Who can join the swim?

Anyone aged 9 years or older is welcome. Swimmers under 18 must be supervised by a parent or guardian. To ensure everyone’s safety, all participants must be able to swim at least 100 meters unaided.

What safety measures are in place?

Your safety is our priority. We provide:

  • Safety Craft & Spotters: Our team will be on the water and shore monitoring all swimmers.

  • Visibility: All swimmers must wear a brightly coloured swim hat.

  • Emergency Signals: If you hear a siren or air horn, you must exit the water immediately at the designated point.

  • Risk: Please note that all participants swim at their own risk.

What kit do I need to bring?

  • Required: A bright swim hat and your swimming kit.

  • Recommended: A tow-float is highly encouraged for visibility. If you have a wetsuit, feel free to bring it, though "skins" (costume only) are also welcome.

  • Post-swim: Bring plenty of warm layers, a woolly hat, and a towel to help your body temperature recover quickly.

Where do I enter the water?

Swimmers must only use the designated entry/exit area in front of the clubhouse. Accessing the water from the dam wall, bridge, or fishing pegs is strictly prohibited. For your safety, jumping or diving from the jetty is not allowed due to fluctuating water levels.

What if I have a medical condition?

If you have a medical condition or are taking medication that may affect your swimming ability, please notify a member of the YOS team at the registration desk before entering the water.

What health precautions should I take?

  • Before: Stay hydrated and cover any open cuts or sores with waterproof plasters. Do not swim if you are feeling unwell or have an infection.

  • During: Be mindful of slippery ramps, sharp stones, or occasional fishing lines.

  • After: Dry off and dress in warm clothes immediately. If you feel unwell in the days following a swim (e.g., symptoms of gastroenteritis), please seek medical advice and notify YOS Admin.
