On Monday 19th January 2015 history was made at Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers when (subject to verification by the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA)),  16 year old Hazel Killingbeck (The Ice Princess) became the youngest person in the world to complete an Ice Mile swim!

It took just over 32 minutes to complete over a mile in water with an average  temperature of just 2.5ºC.

3 Ice Mile attempters each took to the reservoir to swim two laps of the 860m course, whilst 2 IceK attempts did one lap and a short course to give them a total distance of 1080m. The two others who attempted Ice Miles at Harthill very nearly completed the full distance.  We commend Sue Croft and Sally Buck for their fantastic efforts in these very cold temperatures.

Michelle Millard and Wendy Figures both completed Ice Kilometre swims and will also have their swims verified by IISA and be added to the winter swimming hall of fame!

The swimmers were supported by friends and family, YOS volunteers and coaches and we would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped out on the day.  We couldn’t do it without our members, volunteers and supporters!

YOS Member Gary Ridgeway produced this amazing video, capturing the moments for us forever:
