For those of you interested in entering a winter swim event for the first time there are two winter swimming organisations and numerous events so I thought I’d do a quick list of some events in the UK.

10/11 December 2016  Big Chill Swim
Low Wood Bay Marina, Lake Windermere.

bigchillswim

This is part of the International Winter Swimming Association events programme  (IWSA)

This event is usually in Jan/Feb but the Marina is having work done next year so, it’s been brought forward for this season.  It probably won’t be as cold as we’d normally expect for a winter competition.  That being the case it might be worth considering for a first time event.

There is a mixture of fun events and more demanding, serious events and it’s a lovely weekend with a fantastic atmosphere.

  • 30m heady up breaststroke
  • 30m Butterfly
  • 60m Freestyle
  • 120m Freestyle
  • 240m Freestyle
  • 4 person relay
  • 450m Freestyle Endurance Swim
  • 1000m Freestyle British Championships
  • All age categories

YOS have a few entries over the weekend.  We’ve entered some teams and you’d be welcome to join one – just drop me an email by mid-November so that we can sort it out. wendy.figures@yorkshireoutdoorswimmers.com

Swimmers should arrange their own individual entries via the Chillswim website along with their travel and accommodation.  We will have a YOS flag set up by the event so that we have a team meeting point and baggage area.

Tooting Bec Lido, London

7th-uk-open-water-swimming-champs-tooting-bec-lido-londonThis is also part of the International Winter Swimming Association events programme  (IWSA) but it looks like a much more fun & sprinty affair and it’s split into age categories.

  • 10-14 yrs, 15-19yrs, 20-29yrs, 30-39 yrs, 40-49yrs, 50-59yrs, 60-69yrs, 70-79yrs, 80 yrs+
  • 4x30m mixed sex relay with combined ages for age group categories.
  • The big splash which is a mass jump in.

I’ve copied this information from the website as I’ve never been to it so, can’t give you any further advise except to look at the website – slsc.org.uk

28th January 2017
Dublin Winter Swim Open Meet
Wild Water Armagh, N Ireland

iisaThis is part of The International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) event circuit.  You should register with IISA as a member and set up a bio page – it’s free.  Once you’re registered, entry to events is easier as they have your details and swim history.

They have short and long distance events along with relays.

It’s in a 2 lane outdoor 25m pool so, it’s a long day of events but it’s a smashing event and the hospitality is super friendly.

  • 1k Freestyle
  • 500 m Freestyle
  • 100 m Freestyle
  • 50 m Freestyle
  • 4 x 50 m mixed sex relay
  • 4 x 25 m fun relay.

I went to this event last year and it was brilliant.  I don’t know if I can fit it into my schedule this season but it’s well worth a weekend away.

11th February 2017
Great Britain Ice Swimming Champs
The Cruin, Loch Lomond, Scotland

iisaThis is also part of The International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) event circuit.  If not already done so, you should register with IISA as a member and set up a bio page – it’s free.  Once you’re registered, entry to events is easier as they have your details and swim history.

  • 1k Freestyle
  • 500 m Freestyle
  • 100 m Freestyle
  • 100 m Breaststroke
  • 4 x 100 m mixed Freestyle relay
  • 4 x 50 m mixed medley relay.
  • All age gategories

We’re taking a team to this one – the bigger the better!

Entries aren’t open yet but you need to register your interest via the IISA GB website so that they have a rough idea of demand in order to work out the approximate timings of events.

Let me know if you’re entering and if you want to be in a relay. wendy@yorkshireoutdoorswimmers.com

Swimmers are booking accommodation now but there is plenty around Loch Lomond, just not much within walking distance of the event.

You will need to complete a medical, and ECG and an affidavit for some of the events so, don’t leave it to the last minute to enter as the paperwork and appointments may take a few days to obtain.

There are probably more winter swim events around but I’ve just given you the main ones in the UK.

Have a go.  It might be competition but there are all abilities entered and the atmosphere is always very friendly and supportive.
